FC Girondins de Bordeaux have decided to abandon its professional status. They will end all of the players' and coaches' contracts and close their academy too

What a heartbreak!

The famous French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux, founded in 1881 and having won six Ligue 1 titles (the last one in 2009), has basically ceased to exist.

According to reports, the club has decided to abandon its professional status and terminate contracts with all of its players and coaching staff.

Furthermore, their famous academy is set to be closed.

Bordeaux, whose former players include Zinedine Zidane, Yoann Gourcuff, Bixente Lizarazu, Christophe Dugarry, Jean Tigana, Patrick Battiston and many others, were relegated to Ligue 2 in 2022 after finishing 20th in the top-flight.

The key to their downfall was financial issues since they accumulated around €40m of debt.

In the last few weeks, they were in talks with Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), before the American investors pulled out of negotiations.
