West Ham fans leave stands at 2-0, return at 2-2, only to see their team lose on penalties

It's safe to say that the Hammers' supporters did not deserve to celebrate their club's victory and witness its progress to the FA Cup semi-finals

Back in the day, football fans would stand with their team no matter what. Regardless of the result, form, success (or lack of it), rivals...

Of course, there are still such supporters, that's for sure. But there are others as well. Some would call them spoiled and disrespectful, and it wouldn't be far from the truth.

As of last night, West Ham fans - not all, of course - are among them, and unfortunately, they are not the only ones. The list is, in fact, pretty long, but the Hammers' supporters are the latest example of a sad phenomenon - leaving the stands before the end of the game when their team's situation seems hopeless.

Last night, the London side was 2-0 down ahead of added time in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Leeds United, and some of its fans thought everything was over, gave up on their lads, and started exiting the stadium.

Nevertheless, thanks to Mateus Fernandes and Axel Disasi's goals in the 93rd and 96th minutes, West Ham salvaged a draw and secured extra time, while the fans who had left started rushing back to the stands.

Some of them managed to return, while others were forced to watch the remainder of the game on their phones outside the stadium.

Now, the Hammers' players undoubtedly deserved to win the game because of their relentless fight and strong never-give-up spirit, but their fans by no means deserved to celebrate the victory and the progress to the FA Cup semis.

They brought bad luck to their club, as West Ham lost the match on penalties and were eliminated, while Leeds advanced to their first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years.

At the same time, this match is a lesson about the fan culture, loyalty, support, and respect, or rather, a complete lack of all these traits that make a good supporter.

The aforementioned Hammers' fans are an example of the opposite. Don't be like them. Stand with your team no matter what, and a miracle might happen.
