Weghorst will not be offered a new deal at Old Trafford

The Dutch striker didn't convince Manchester United to spent money on him

Wout Weghorst has been given six months to prove himself at Old Trafford and convince the sports sector that he is worth a permanent transfer. His countryman and Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag saw him as a ‘cover’ when Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are not available and secretly hoped that the Burnley striker could make a bigger impact during the season. Unfortunately for anybody, he didn’t. It can be said that apart from his lowly two goals in 26 games, the biggest impact he had was to kiss the ball with which Soll March missed the crucial penalty for Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final, sending the Red Devils to the final.

So, the decision, published in England media today that he will not be offered a new contract is quite a logical one. Everything will just remain on a six-month loan, and Weghorst will be back in the Premier League next year, but in Burnley’s shirt, in case coach Vincent Company decides he needs him. United paid 3,000,000 euros for the player’s loan back in January, but it just didn’t work out.

Erik ten Hag made sure that Weghorst gets every possible chance in United. He constantly pushed the player into the starting line-up, gave him a chance and praised him. He worked a lot for the team, even played in midfield for a few games, but that was just not enough. Ten Hag already publically said that United need a proper number 9 for next season, so their whish list consists of Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, Randall Kolo Muani and Rasmus Hojlund. A lot of things in the summer transfer window will depend on who will take over the club, but also on how United will do business in the market. It will be necessary for Ten Hag to sell, because due to Financial Fair Play, he will be allowed to set aside only 115,000,000 euros for transfers, and the rest of the money for the purchase will have to be used through sales.
