Weah's effect: Wenger's lie that fooled Klinsmann to join Monaco

German striker reveals he would have never come to France if he only knew...

Imagine Jurgen Klinsmann and George Weah up front with Arsene Wenger in the dugout. It sounds terrific, right? Well, that's what Klinsmann himself thought, too, once the French coach called him to join AS Monaco back in 1992.

There was only one catch, or a lie, to be precise. And the ex-Arsenal gaffer was the one who lied to Klinsmann in order to bring him to the world's second-smallest sovereign state.

"We had negotiations, and it was all very easy. I had the offer to play up front with George Weah, who was one of the top strikers, and Arsene [Wenger] said 'yeah, I want you two playing up front' and I thought, wow this is like winning the lottery playing with George Weah," explains Klinsmann to TalkSport and adds:

"So I signed the contract. And I go the next day to Monaco, and Weah gets sold to Paris Saint-Germain.

"I went right away to Arsene and said, 'Arsene, you promise me I can play up front with George Weah', and he said 'Well, if I told you we were selling him, you wouldn't have signed the contract'. I said 'Yeah that's right, I wouldn't have signed the contract'.

"But the deal was signed, and I spent two years with Arsene Wenger in Monaco."
