Sofapaka FC captain Clifton Miheso has expressed firm belief that the club will avoid relegation from the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL), despite a difficult campaign that has left them rooted at the bottom of the table.
Speaking in a local radio interview on Saturday, 21 February, Miheso admitted the team has struggled for large parts of the season, but insisted survival remains within reach.
The Nairobi-based side suffered their fifth consecutive league defeat on Friday, going down 2-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium.
The loss left Batoto ba Mungu with just 14 points from 21 matches, deep in relegation trouble.
Miheso, who joined Sofapaka as a free agent during the January transfer window, did not hide his frustration, particularly with the manner in which his side conceded early in the match.
“I got mad when we conceded within the first three minutes. The dressing room was heated at halftime. As a captain, I had to revive the morale of the team, but what was that?” Miheso posed.
The former Harambee Stars winger attributed the defeat to avoidable mistakes, maintaining that Sofapaka have often been their own worst enemies this season.
Sofapaka recently parted ways with head coach Ezekiel Akwana following a string of poor results and appointed experienced tactician Abdallah Juma in a bid to steady the ship. However, results have yet to turn in their favor.
Despite the turmoil, which includes reported financial challenges at the Elly Kalekwa-owned club, Miheso remains upbeat, drawing parallels with last season when the club also flirted with relegation before surviving.
“We are not getting relegated. Of course, the reality is that we are down there, but we still have 13 matches to go, and it is a process,” Miheso said.
“There are confidence issues in the squad. Sorting out these issues is a process, but in these 13 games, we are surviving.”
Sofapaka’s next run of fixtures could prove decisive. They are set to face defending champions Kenya Police FC, Mara Sugar, Nairobi United, and Bidco United, sides also battling for consistency this season.
“The good thing is that we have already played against the top-performing teams, and we are now going to face sides that are also in a similar situation as we are,” Miheso added. “I have played against all those clubs. Honestly speaking, no side pinned us down, we lost because of our own mistakes.”
