The man who scored the 2014 FIFA World Cup final's winner opens up on how he missed the chance to wear a Liverpool shirt

When a guy bags the game's only goal in the WC finals, you probably guess he has enjoyed more than a satisfying career, with no regrets whatsoever.

But in the case of German forward Mario Gotze, it's not like that. The World Cup winner with Germany in 2014 was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the summer of 2016.

It was Jurgen Klopp's first window as Liverpool manager and he was keen to bring Gotze to the club.

However, the tiny winger decided to leave Bayern Munich for his old side, Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately for him, his second spell at the Signal Iduna Park went wrong, while Klopp turned to Sadio Mane, and we all know how it went from there.

Now, Gotze is the new player of the Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt, but he reveals that not signing for the Scousers back in the days still leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.

"Liverpool had finished eighth in their first season with Jurgen and had not qualified for the Champions League," Gotze told German news outlet Bild.

"Even in previous years, it wasn't the club that always played at the top, while Dortmund had previously played a top season under Thomas Tuchel. BVB were on the up. Jurgen was still building something.

"In retrospect, you have to say: Liverpool would have been better, " Gotze concluded.
