The Hornets set to replace 70-year-old Ranieri with Roy Hodgson - who is four years older

You can't buy experience, can you? The older the wiser, right? Well, that must be the way Watford owner Gino Pozzo is thinking. The notoriously eccentric Italian is set to appoint their third head coach of the season – and it's the veteran, Roy Hodgson.

Claudio Ranieri was given less than four months and just 13 league games to show what he can do. It turned out that he couldn't do much. He arrived to replace Xisco Munoz when the Hornets were 14th in the table and he leaves with the team 19th and fighting relegation.

Watford said in a statement confirming Ranieri’s departure that he was "a man of great integrity and honour, who will always be respected here at Vicarage Road for his efforts in leading the team with dignity". Explaining the move, the club continued: "With nearly half of the Premier League campaign remaining, a change in the head coach position now will give a new appointment sufficient time to work with a talented squad to achieve the immediate goal of retaining Premier League status."

And this new appointment is a familiar one. Roy Hodgson.

We thought that Roy had said goodbye to coaching then he left Crystal Palace at the end of last season. But here we are. The call of the Premier League was too strong and probably more exciting than sitting in front of the television having tea and biscuits.

Hodgson has previously managed the England and Finland national teams as well as English clubs such as Liverpool, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City. He replaced Fabio Capello as England manager in May 2012. Under Hodgson's reign, England reached the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, failed to advance to the knockout stages at the 2014 World Cup and were knocked out by Iceland in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016.

After a solid job he's done at Crystal Palace, Pozzo believes that the veteran coach is just the man to lead Watford to safety. It will be great to see Roy back on the sidelines. We should enjoy it because time flies – especially at Vicarage Road.
