Vihiga step up preps as Champions League action nears

Three-time Women Premier League (WPL) champions Vihiga Queens are polishing their technical aspect of their game ahead of their trip to Egypt where they will represent Kenya and CECAFA in the inaugural CAF Women's Champions League. 

The Charles Okere-led side hit residential camp at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) on Saturday 23 October 2021 to continue with preparations and are looking to play two friendly matches before jetting out to Cairo. 

"We started our residential camp with endurance and fitness tests and the players are in a good place. We had not broken camp since playing in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women's Cup final. The players have remained active and those who were in the national team are also in good shape. 

We have therefore shifted our focus to technical preparedness. We play our first friendly match on Thursday 28 October, against WPL side Zetech Sparks, where the technical bench will gauge the team's level of preparedness, " said assistant coach Boniface Nyamunyamuh. 

The side is also organising for a friendly match against an under 15 or 17 boys side over the weekend. "The morale in camp is high and the players are raring to go. We have deemed those two friendly matches adequate for preparation. They also give us a chance to test our formations seeing as we have some new players in the ropes," added the tactician.  

The side has a daunting task ahead of them in the CAF Champions League where they will play South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns, Morocco's ASFAR, and Nigeria's Rivers Angels in the group stages.
