Victory, at last! Poor Viola record league win after four months

By beating Udinese 5-1 yesterday, Fiorentina became the 95th team from the top five European leagues with at least one league win this season, leaving only one side in the "winless club" - Wolverhampton

After the previous Serie A campaign in which they finished sixth (five points away from the Champions League), and after reaching the UEFA Conference League semi-finals, who could have imagined that Fiorentina would be that abysmal this season?

In the cup competitions, Coppa Italia and ECL, they are doing well, as they are still alive in both - in the Round of 16 in the former and (seeded) knockout phase playoffs in the latter. But their league form... Terrible.

Until yesterday, Fiorentina were one of only two teams (out of 96 in total) in the European top five leagues without a single league win. Their fans have been waiting since August 23, when the Serie A began, and watching their winless crew fail game after game for 15 rounds!

Throughout that period, three coaches sat on their bench. Stefano Pioli started this awful run, and Daniele Galloppa succeeded him as an interim manager, but didn't lead the team in any Serie A games. Finally, Paolo Vanoli waited for a month and a half to record that precious triumph, and, in the end, he and his boys did it!

After almost four months, Viola finally triumphed in the Italian top tier, beating Udinese 5-1 yesterday. One would say they vented their anger, though an early red card for the visitors' custodian, Maduks Okoye, helped a lot.

Rolando Mandragora, Albert Gudmundsson, Cher Ndour, and Moise Kean (a brace) all netted in this crushing triumph, finally paving the way to victory for their club. This way, the Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers remain the only winless team in the five best leagues in Europe with only two draws in 17 EPL games.

Either way, a dark period in Fiorentina's history now appears to be behind them. They are still at the bottom of the table, but their spirits are now undoubtedly up, and the safe zone is just five points away.

Viola may have started their resurrection.
