Victor Wanyama linked with sensational return to Scottish giants Celtic

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has been linked with a sensational return to Scottish giants Celtic FC after the midfielder revealed he would not be extending his stay at Major League Soccer side CF Montreal next season.

At the start of October, the 31-year-old midfielder, who joined Montreal at the start of 2020 from English Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur, confirmed that he won’t be back for the 2023 MLS season

"Honestly, I think that this question has been long asked and the truth is that at the end of the season, I will leave. I have had great years here and enjoyed being part of the team," he said.

Following the news, Scottish publication Glasgow Times reported that Wanyama’s former club have been put on alert after the player’s declaration.

“Celtic have been put on alert after former midfielder Victor Wanyama revealed he is set to leave his club in Canada at the end of their season,” read the publication.

Before his move to the MLS, Celtic tried to re-sign the former Southampton and Tottenham star but the move failed to happen with the Kenyan international revealing Tottenham refused to let him go.

"I had a contract at Tottenham and they made it very difficult to let me go, the demands were very hard,” he said in a previous interview.

The links back to Celtic come at a time when Wanyama also made it clear that he would love to go back to the Scottish giants who are still in his first after thrusting him to fame.

"Celtic are a club that I would love to play for again. It is more than a club. I enjoyed my time there. There was a loan approach, but I do not know what happened. I did not follow it up that much.

I still love that club, it is in my heart. I honestly want to come back and give it a last go because I love the club, the people there, the fans, just everything there was great," he stated.

The Kenyan international on Sunday played his last game for Montreal as the team were got dumped out of Major Soccer League Cup contention by New York City FC following a 3-1 loss at Saputo Stadium.

Montreal had seen off Orlando City 2-0 in the quarter finals but failed to advance past the semis.
