Unlike Pochettino, new PSG coach already knows his No. 1 keeper

Christophe Galtier decided who will be PSG's first keeper

The ’battle’ between two goalkeepers lasted during the 2021 season but without a clear winner. In the end, both Keylor Navas and Gigi Donnarumma played a similar amount of games in PSG’s jersey. And both were not happy about it, especially the Costa Rican. The three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid suffered from PSG’s policy to buy young perspective footballers and a free agent Donnarumma was perfect for the Parisians. Former coach Mauricio Pochettino declined to name a ’winner’ of the number 1 shirt, but new boss Christophe Galtier had no such trouble.

Pre-season is not over yet, but the former Saint Ettienne, Lille and Nice coach has already decided to go with youth.

„Keylor made important and decisive saves, he works very well. But I was very clear with the goalkeepers at the start of the season, I don't want a rotation, I want to work with a number 1. He knows what I expect of him in his role as number 2. I know that deep inside himself there is a lot of frustration. But for a club like PSG it is very important to have two very good goalkeepers“ said Galtier to the journalists.

That puts Navas in a difficult position. At 35, he still has a few good years left in his career, but obviously not in Paris. Will he finally decide to ask for a transfer, or will he swallow his pride and think about his family, who is settled in the French capital?

"You have to study a lot of things. In the end, I have a very good relationship with Donnarumma, there are no problems with him. Of course, I still want to play all the matches, if the situation stays like this year, it will be complicated. We'll see what happens in the future. My family is happy in Paris, I'm happy here. We'll see what happens, but it has to change one way or another" he told Canal + in April this year. Now he knows the situation, will he react?
