UEFA to investigate Rudiger, Mbappe, Vinicius after Atletico celebrations

Real Madrid players apparently made inappropriate gestures towards the home crowd

The Champions League last 16 game between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid was a joy to watch. The Madrid city derby was a thriller which ended with a penalty shootout controversy and Real‘s win. The home fans handled it badly and started to throw objects, including plastic bottles and a lighter, towards the pitch. UEFA was quick to open investigation against Atletico and the home team indicated that their fan‘s behavior was provoked by some Real players. So, UEFA decided to open investigation against them.

"A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Daniel Ceballos Fernandez and Vinícius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 match between Club Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025. Further information on this matter will be provided in due course" reads the short statement.

According to Marca, Rudiger‘s gesture of putting his hand around his neck is being investigated, in the case of Mbappé , the touching of his genitals, and in the case of Vinicius, a confrontation with the crowd before and after the end of the match. Record 15-time champions and current holders Madrid beat their rivals on penalties at Atletico's Metropolitano stadium on March 12 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. The night ended in controversy after Atletico forward Julian Alvarez had a penalty controversially disallowed in the shoot-out for supposedly touching the ball twice.
