UCL: Galatasaray stun United and Old Trafford, Bayern wins in Denmark
Reading Time: 3min | Tue. 03.10.23. | 23:59
Even with two goals from Hojlund, the Red Devils lost 3-2 from the Turkish champion
In January 2013, Wilfried Zaha signed from Crystal Palace to Manchester United. The Ivory Coast forward turned out to be Sir Alex Ferguson's last ever signing for the Red Devils, as the Scot left his place in June that year, but his successors David Moyes and Louis van Gaal didn't apprechiate him very much. Zaha would go on to win just 167 minutes of action as a Manchester United player before a loan spell at Cardiff City preceded his eventual return to Crystal Palace. And this season he left for Turkey and signed for Galatasaray, and came back to Old Trafford to play his part in a huge upset and a win in the middle of England: Manchester United – Galatasaray 2-3.
United's new striker Rasmus Hojlund scored a brace, and both his goals gave Manchester the lead, but the Norwegian couldn't do all on his own. Football is not basketball and one player cannot do much without his teammates. And Hojlund was left alone tonight. Whatever he did (and he even scored the third goal, which was ruled as an offside), his colleagues nullified. After 1-0, in came Dalot's error and Zaha's equalizer. United pushed on, the Norwegian scored again, and then, a disaster. First the whole defenses crumbled and allowed Akturkoglu to equalize 20 minutes from time, and then Onana's mistake led to Casemiro's red card and a penalty. A bit of luck (as always) was there for the home team when Icardi missed the whole goal from the spot, but another error just sealed United's faith. The whole defense looked ridiculous again and Icardi got the second chance and used it for the final 3-2.
In the other game in Group A, Bayern unexpectedly fought a hard battle and secured a 2-1 win over host Copenhagen only in the 81st minute. Apart from an easy win, Bayern Munich expected to break a Barcelona record and go unbeaten in 18 group-stage games away from home. With this win, they surpassed Barcelona for the longest unbeaten run in Champions League group games away from home, which the Catalans set at 17 between November 2006 and October 2012. After 45 minutes of nothing (from both teams), the home team broke the deadlock unexpectedly in the 55th minute, when Lerager used a ball which Kim initially blocked and scored after a clumsy shot. The Germans finally pushed some more and Musiala leveled the score after only 12 minutes. Copehnagen had one excellent chance but missed it, and against such clubs like Bayern, it can be tragically. So, in the 81st minute, the 18 years old Mathys Tel has done it again. He scored the winner, which was his sixth goal in ten appearances in all competitions and secured the win, the unbeaten status and the first place in the group.
