UCL draw: It's time for Madrid's vengeance, chaos in Athens and Istanbul

Reading Time: 3min | Fri. 30.01.26. | 15:30

The whole world was talking about the shocking end of the recent Benfica-Real Madrid blockbuster... not being aware that it was only a prequel

Anatoliy Trubin stunned everyone with a goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time, a moment that echoed around the world.

But Real Madrid won't have to wait long for revenge.

The draw in Nyon on Friday has paired the giants from neighbouring countries in a Champions League play-off duel, setting the stage for yet another spectacle between Benfica and Los Blancos. One drama has barely ended - another is already loading.

And chaos is also guaranteed on the Bosphorus.

Galatasaray pulled out Juventus, instantly reviving memories in Turin of that frozen night in 2013-14, when Wesley Sneijder struck in the 85th minute, burying the Old Lady and sending them crashing into the Europa League.

Times have changed, of course.

But there's quiet satisfaction in Istanbul.

Juventus look - just about - a more forgiving opponent than Atletico Madrid, who instead face a fearless Club Brugge led by Aleksandar Stankovic. Especially with Juve likely without Dusan Vlahovic, even at this crucial stage.

When it comes to possible upsets, one tie stands out. Borussia Dortmund appear to have landed well with Atalanta, sparing Bayer Leverkusen, who instead drew Olympiacos - on paper, a kinder task. On paper only, because Athens will burn on those nights.

Elsewhere, PSG vs Monaco feels like a play-off where the winner is already emerging from the shadows. The same could be said for Newcastle vs Qarabag - the first Azerbaijani club ever to reach the Champions League knockouts.
