Everyone was tweeting the name of Newcastle's goalkeeper on Friday afternoon - because it's fun!

Newcastle fans made just about everyone tweeting their goalkeeper's name - as a joke! On Friday afternoon, a Newcastle United fan account used its influence to bombard a fast food chain's timeline with the words Nick Pope. Why? Because it's fun!

Well, it seems it was the mission of the Newcastle fan page Toon Polls to gain the attention of the fast food giant's official Twitter account - and it was a resounding success.

With over 22,000 followers that include passionate footy fans as well as first-team players, the page flexed its social influencing muscles by hijacking a poll that asked whether tomato or gherkins are a better addition to a burger.

The burger-selling people behind the account caved in under the pressure as thousands of people tweeted their goalie's name at them - until they caved in and did the same.

It was a signal for just about everyone and anyone to tweet the former Burnley's custodian's name and get it the most talked about subject in the United Kingdom. Why? Because it's fun!

Shortly after the burger joint, there were celebrities, companies, football teams, restaurants and just about everyone uttering the name of the 30-year-old England international as if the words were magic.

Pope must have been bemused at the unexpected amount of attention he received on a day when he wasn't even playing. He made his official debut of the black and whites last weekend in the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest and is expected to continue as first-choice 'keeper ahead of Martin Dubravka when the Magpies travel to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
