Fresh from signing Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars defender Alphonce Omija, Tunisian giants Étoile Sportive du Sahel are reportedly plotting another raid on the record Kenyan champions, this time targeting star midfielder Alpha Onyango.

According to media reports in Tunisia, Sahel, who have endured a challenging start to the new season, have earmarked Onyango as a priority signing and are said to have already tabled a proposal to Gor Mahia for his services.
It remains unclear whether Gor will allow another key player to leave just days before the new campaign kicks off. Having already lost Omija, the record Kenyan champions may be reluctant to sanction another departure, especially as they seek to reclaim the league title they surrendered to Kenya Police FC last season.
Onyango was one of Kenya’s standout performers at the recently concluded 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, where Harambee Stars reached the quarterfinals before bowing out in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar, who later lost in the final to Morocco.
So impressive were his performances at CHAN that he scooped two Man of the Match awards after starring against DR Congo and Madagascar.
The central midfielder has become an integral part of head coach Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars setup. His calmness, vision, and composure in midfield have also been pivotal for Gor Mahia, making interest from abroad unsurprising.
In a recent interview, Onyango revealed his ambition of playing in Europe, insisting his journey is only just beginning:
“Representing Kenya is everything, but I am not done. My dream is to play in a top European league to show the world what Kenyan talent can do. I want to keep improving, make my family proud, and inspire young players that dreams do come true.”
A product of Kakamega High School, Onyango rose through the Gor Mahia youth system while still in school. After completing his KCSE exams, he was promoted to the senior team, initially featuring sporadically before cementing his place as a key midfield anchor for both club and country.
Should the move materialise, Onyango will once again reunite with Omija, his former teammate at Gor Mahia youth, junior national teams, Gor Mahia senior squad, and now Harambee Stars.
