The young stopper returns to his homeland

Jean Clair Todibo's loan in Benfica ended ingloriously. Instead of spending the whole season there improving, he collected only 160 minutes in two games, and that was quite a sufficient reason for Barcelona to hand him over to someone else, who will be able to use his potential.

After several days of intense negotiations, Barcelona managed to agree on the transfer of the French stopper to Nice. The reason why the transfer went into a "push me-pull you" scenario was a financial one. Nice offered a loan, with a buyout option worth between 7.2 and 9.6 million USD. In the end, Barcelona got it their way, since the Catalan club managed to box out a larger amount of money. More precisely, the purchase option will amount to 10 million USD (1.1 billion KSH), with the transfer that could reach up to 18 million USD (1.9 billion KSH) through various bonuses.

Todibo hopes that Nice will buy him fully in the summer, in order to put an end to his painful episode in Barcelona. The young stopper is one of the failed investments of Barcelona in the recent transfer windows, minding the fact that the investment was almost minimal - only one million euros were paid for his transfer two years ago. Todibo was in Toulouse and had six more months until the expiration of his contract, so the French club accepted whatever was offered.

From then on, Todibo was in the training process in Barcelona - until January last year. Then the plan was for him to move to Schalke for 1.8 million USD of initial loan and a purchase option worth almost 28 million USD. As the coronavirus pandemic came, Todibo's transfer to Schalke failed because the club from Gelsenkirchen came to the brink of financial ruin. This summer, Barcelona sent him to Benfica, but he could not earn any playing minutes alongside Nicolas Otamendi and Jan Vertonghen. Benfica, meanwhile, bought Lucas Verissimo from South American vice-champion Santos for 7.8 million USD, so Todibo basically became a "sub to a sub".

Todibo, a native of French Guiana, hopes he will have much more luck in the south of France...
