Title or no, Inter will extend Chivu's contract

According to the reports from Italy, the club is very pleased with Chivu's work

There have been setbacks—such as elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the very first step of the knockout stage—there have also been slips in the league, and he even lost the Derby della Madonnina twice. However, Cristian Chivu has convinced the leaders of Inter Milan that he is the right man for the Nerazzurri bench. Above all thanks to his results in the league, which is why on the day of the match against Atalanta BC, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the club’s management plans to offer the Romanian a new contract.

At the moment it is not known when this will happen or how long the new deal would last, but Beppe Marotta, the Nerazzurri’s chief executive, plans for Chivu to remain head coach even after June 2027—the date until which he is currently tied by the contract he signed last summer, when he replaced Simone Inzaghi following his stint at Parma Calcio 1913. He was given a delicate task, as Inter had played the Champions League final only a few weeks earlier and lost it in Munich to Paris Saint-Germain. SSC Napoli entered the season as champions. AC Milan signed Luka Modrić and launched an ambitious project with Massimiliano Allegri, and not many believed that by mid-March Inter would be in a strong position to win a domestic double.

Yet they are favorites: in the league they have a seven-point lead over the Rossoneri, while in the Coppa Italia semi-final they drew 0–0 away against Como 1907 and now await the return leg at San Siro. The other semi-final is between Atalanta BC and SS Lazio. That means Chivu has a chance to bring two trophies into the club’s cabinet already in his first season—something few expected. That is why the club’s management wants to react by increasing his salary and offering a new contract to tie the future to the former defender. His former teammates from the era when Inter dominated Serie A are pleased with that scenario and give Chivu full credit.

Cristian Chivu is the right man for Inter. He’s doing a fantastic job. I hope he wins the Scudetto, and in any case he is destined for a great coaching career,” said Diego Milito, the former striker and now president of Racing Club de Avellaneda, who will be in the stands to watch the match against Atalanta.

Sitting beside him as a guest will be Walter Samuel, another former star of that powerful Inter team, who is currently working with the Argentina national football team as an assistant to head coach Lionel Scaloni.

I’m delighted with how Inter look under the leadership of Cristian Chivu. He has completely fulfilled his role as a coach. I have great confidence in him and believe that, based on his self-belief, he can achieve a lot,” Samuel added.
