The Turkish giant parted ways with the famous coach after a defeat from Benfica

He’s interesting, he always makes a gaffe worth noticing, and big tournaments just aren’t the same with or without him—but Jose Mourinho is no longer fit for the big stage. It seems he’s no longer suited for big clubs either. Agree or not, that’s what the curve of his career shows, which has been in steep decline—especially after Friday morning’s news that the Portuguese coach was sacked by Fenerbahce. The Turkish club confirmed its split with the experienced manager, after his failed attempt to bring the Canaries back to the Champions League. Their last appearance in the group stage was way back in 2008 and they invested a lot since, but never managed to do it. The progress was expected from Mourinho after his first season with the club but it didn’t come, because just before entry into the elite company, Benfica slammed the gate shut. To make life even harder for him, it was the fierce rival of his Porto side, with which he achieved great results more than two decades ago.

He was phenomenal at Chelsea and Inter, winning domestic and international trophies, made a run with Manchester United to the Europa League trophy, and with Roma to the inaugural Conference League title, but everything else…He failed in Tottenham and Fenerbahce and got sacked by both United and Roma as apart from the trophies he regressed there too. Having suffered another downfall, it’s only natural that football lovers ask what’s next for a coach who once drew sympathy, but gradually lost more and more of it. The Arab world? The Portugal national team? A club on the decline looking to climb back up? Is that realistic with Mourinho? After just 37 wins in 62 matches in charge of Fenerbahce, and over 100,000,000 euros spent on signings since last year, the doubts are more than justified.
