If the proposal is adopted, it will be valid starting the 2022-2023 season
Executives of the Portuguese football leagues are considering heavy structural changes. According to renowned Portuguese Record, the Primeira Liga led by Pedro Proenca, is considering reducing the number of participants from 18 to 16 clubs.
The proposal has already been presented to the owners and presidents of the clubs. To take effect in the 2022-2023 season, it should be approved by the General Assembly of the league no later than June 30th, by the official end of the current season to allow enough time for Primeira and Segunda Liga to adjust competition calendars in line with the relegation of the teams to the lower rank and promoting the teams to a higher rank of the competition.
Since 1934, the Portuguese championship has often changed the number of participants. The last time was in the 2014-2015 season, when the number jumped to 18, since 16 clubs participated in the race for the national title in the previous eight seasons.
Just a few weeks ago, the president of Olympique Marseille, Jacques Henri Eyraud, also publicly demanded a reorganization of the French Ligue 1 format, advocating a reduction in the number of clubs, justifying that the 20-team championship is no longer sustainable.
