The last big earner in Barcelona is in no hurry to renew his contract

De Jong has a contract until 2026 and doesn't want to reduce his wage

When the current management led by President Joan Laporta took over from Josep Bartomeu, the financial situation was devastating. Now, it’s a little better, but it’s far from ideal. The Catalans again registered players on the opening day of La Liga, and one of the reasons they managed to it was the reconstructed deals with veterans. Bartomeu handed quite expensive to senior players while he was in charge, and one of the first things Laporta did was to cut their wages down or sell them. One by one, Pique, Alba, Busquets agreed on a reduced wage and then left the club. One of the footballers whose reduced salary helped Barca register players was new captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. But the only player who remains firm is Frenky De Jong.

According to Marca, the player and the club have yet to sit down for talks, but the player is in no hurry to do so. Why? Well, because his contract runs down in 2026, three years from now. Second, this season, he is on schedule to receive the sum, which exceeds 27 million euros gross, due to his wage and bonuses. Third, he still remembers how Barca tried to force him to move to Manchester United to reunite with his former coach, Erik Ten Hag. Last June, 65 million euros was the sum the Red Devils offered, but the player was reluctant to stay. And now, he has the same desire and also wants to keep this contract. On the other hand, Barcelona still needs to trim down the wage bill, and they would give him a contract extension, probably until 2028, but with a lower wage. So, the chess game is about to begin.
