Union Berlin are about to confirm the signing of defender Attila Szalai

Hungarian daily Nemzeti Sport reported that Fenerbahce defender Attila Szalai will leave the Turkish club and continue his career at Union Berlin in Germany.

The Hungarian national team defender, who joined Fenerbahce in 2021, signed his contract with the club that finished in fourth place in the Bundesliga last season and thus qualified for the Champions League group stage.

On Saturday evening, Union Berlin made the first offer of $13 million, but it was rejected by the Istanbul club, which demanded $16.5 million for the strong centre-back. The German club already increased their offer to $15.5 million in the next round, meaning the clubs were just a million apart in their negotiations. Well, according to information from Nemzeti Sport, an agreement has been reached - and Szalai will continue with the Bundesliga team.

Szalai was a transfer target for Chelsea in January 2022, but despite strong claims from the Hungarian national team boss Marco Rossi, his boy remained in the Turkish capital.

The 25-year-old international played in 117 matches for Fenerbahce, scored seven goals and provided four assists, and won the Turkish Cup with his team this year. The Hungarian international had joined Fenerbahce as a replacement for Kim Min-jae when the Korean left for Naples. In 2023, it's highly likely that both Napoli and Fener will be searching for replacements.
