The goal that moved the Earth

On this day thirty years ago a goal celebration produced an earthquake

Hey, it's Argentina. Everything is on another level there - especially the passion for football. Mozzart Sport Kenya brought you stories from this South American county that seem too crazy to be true.

To name a few... The national team fans wanted to take Diego Maradona's heart in a container and use it as an amulet in the World Cup. Also, there was the mysterious Kiricocho, the jinx that was used by the legendary Argentinean coach Carlos Bilardo. Oh, and there was the time when an assistant referee forgot his flag. Oh, and there was that shooting in a fourth-division game... So, yes, you get the point. Crazy Argentina.

But none of those stories seems quite as hard to believe as the one from 5 April 1992, when fierce rivals from the city of La Plata met at the now-demolished Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi. Estudiantes and Gimnasia played their league match. Of course, it was important for both sets of fans - it's a derby match. But this game has evidently had more riding on it - as was confirmed by the seismograph of the La Plata Astronomical and Meteorological Observatory. What, what? Yes!

When the visitors scored the game's only goal, a sumptuous free-kick by their Uruguayan midfielder Jose Perdomo, the celebrations were so wild, the jumping for joy was so intense - that the instruments at the observatory picked it up as an earthquake of 0.3 degrees on the Richter scale.

To this day, the goal is remembered as The Goal of the Earthquake, and Perdomo, the goalscorer has been known ever since as Earthquake. We dare you to find a better nickname for a footballer!

Perdomo, or Earthquake if you prefer, who is currently working as a coach for Penarol in his homeland, is happy to remember the day he became immortal for the Gimnasia fans.

"It's a privilege to be remembered and be a part of the history at such a big club. That earthquake came out of my pride and ego. When the referee awarded that free-kick, I wasn't the designated taker in the team. But I felt so confident at that moment that I asked for the ball. It was an amazing moment, really. But I have to congratulate the Gimnasia faithful because it was them who jumped so hard and produced the earthquake."
