The big derby: Fernandes 'crying' on the pitch and Sane refusing a handshake with Klopp
Reading Time: 4min | Fri. 14.05.21. | 10:49
Everything before, during and after the game was exciting
The curse is broken, Klopp has finally won at Old Trafford. After six games (two defeats, six draws), the German has finally won on the „enemy“ ground, and what’s even better, with this win, the Reds are still in contention for the Champions League place. Not to mention that forward Roberto Firminho finally found his form and scored two goals when it was necessary. The Brazilian is only the third Liverpool player to score a brace at Old Trafford, and his partner Mohamed Salah scored his 30th goal of the season against the biggest rival.
Liverpool looked like themselves from last season and their destiny is in their own hands now. West Bromwich Albion, Burnley and Crystal Palace should be winnable games and if they fail again, they don’t deserve to play the Champions League next season.
„The only thing we can do is to win our games, that was not the case before. Being in a position where you have it in your own hands to qualify for the Champions League is a big thing“ said Klopp after the match.

The only thing that downplayed this big victory was the Sadio Mane’s refusal to shake hands with his coach. After the game, Klopp congratulated all the players, but when he went to Mane, the player refused to shake his hand, shaking his head instead. Klopp tried to minimize the incident with the Senegalese, who started the match on the bench and came in in the 75th minute.
„No, there is no problem. I made a late decision in training before the game to put Diogo in. The boys are used to me explaining things but there was no time for that. It is all fine. Sadio was slightly angry but that is all“ said Klopp for Sky Sports after the match.
Manchester United? Defensive problems again. Solskjaer’s men have conceded the most goals from set-pieces in the Premier League. They looked shaky and they will need to pay more attention in training. Oh, and they need another defender, at least. Former Red Devil Roy Keane was critical of his former team.
„United were all over the place, really poor performance from them, poor mentality. Solskjaer looks a bit shell-shocked there. Tonight just not enough quality, giving such bad goals away but the other worry, Liverpool could have scored six or seven. I think Man City are so far ahead of this United squad it is scary. Ole will think they need three or four big players to come in at least“ said Keane, now a Sky Sports pundit after the game.

The former Red Devil’s captain was brutal in his critics of some United players as he feels that the team will have to bring reinforcements in June.
„I don’t want to be critical to Fernandes but he spent half the night crying on the pitch. United players were looking for Liverpool to kick the ball out of play but you only stop with a head injury. I look at the two midfielders, Scott McTominay is a good honest player, they have got Fred. As long as those two players are playing in midfield for Manchester United they will not be winning any big trophies“ said Keane.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was, obviously less critical in public, but he sure said a lot more to the players in the dressing room after the defeat.
„Liverpool deserved the win. But it was a game that we should have capitalised on. That start we had, we should have capitalised more on that one and that’s something we have to learn from and will learn from. I don’t think the boys understood that Liverpool were here for the taking. You never like to concede on set plays. We’ve done that too often, so we need to work on that“ said Solskjaer.
