Reds win 4-2 in Manchester to keep their Champions League hopes alive
Liverpool came back from behind to claim a priceless win against their bitter rivals Manchester United in their late bid to secure a Champions League finish. Roberto Firmino struck on either side of the break to give Liverpool a decisive two-goal lead against a wasteful Manchester United side. Despite taking an early lead, Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost another home match on a day when unrest grew both among the fans and on the Old Trafford pitch.
Bruno Fernandes struck the ball nicely with the outside of this right foot, but it was a clumsy Nathaniel Phillips intervention that really beat Allison and gave United the lead. Liverpool players were still annoyed by the Michael Oliver’s reluctance to review an earlier incident where Eric Bailly may have blocked a shot with his hand.
Ivorian international Bailly seemed determined to give a penalty away as he tumbled Phillips down in his area. Still, VAR review denied the spot kick to the green-clad Reds.
Nathaniel Phillips was slowly making himself a key figure of this encounter as he turned an unlikely provider for Diogo Jota to sweep home on 43 minutes and level the score for the visitors.
The equalizer seemed to have shocked the Red Devils and, all of the sudden, it was Jurgen Klopp’s team that pulled the strings. Their fine spell of dominance brought them the lead in the first half’s added time as Trent Alexander-Arnold curled an inviting free kick into the box and Roberto Firmino timed his run well to meet it at the far post and head past the powerless Dean Henderson.
The match itself was largely overshadowed by another day of Manchester United fans’ protests around the city and especially around Old Trafford.
And Brazilian Firmino scored just after the restart as Manchester United defenders kept toying with the ball in their own half. A few misplaced passes by Fred and too much dwelling on the ball invited more Liverpool pressing. The ball was taken and played into the feet of Firmino, who finished with ease and gave his team a two-goal cushion.
Marcus Rashford scored to drag his team back into the contest on 68 minutes, but United rarely looked like snatching a point. Liverpool looked dangerous on the break and they eventually punished the hosts as Mohamed Salah raced clear and slotted home late on to secure the win and cause further embarrassment to Solskjaer and his out-of-sorts side.
