Roberto De Zerbi's side was the favourite to win in the first match of the season, but failed to score and then conceded late for a 1-0 defeat

Season's premiere and already an upset!

Rennes stun Olympique Marseille in the opening game of the Ligue 1 season on Friday night despite playing with ten men for much of the game.

The hosts' defender, Abdelhamid Ait-Boudlal, was sent off for a reckless tackle on Michael Amir Murillo.

Marseille were close to pouncing on that as Adrien Rabiot fired a long-range missile near the half-time break, but it stayed 0-0 on the scoreboard. Roberto De Zerbi opted for Timothy Weah following the interval, and the newcomer created a fine chance for Murillo around the hour mark, but his header ended on the right post.

De Zerbi's second choice from the bench was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but not even the attacking axis of Auba, Weah, and Mason Greenwood could hurt a ten-man Rennes.

And then, a few moments into the stoppage time, Ludovic Blas slotted home only seconds after coming on for an ecstatic celebration for an unlikely win.
