Ten-man Chelsea stunned in added time: Blues pay high price because of Fofana's red card

Until the Frenchman's dismissal, the London side controlled the game, but that will be a cold comfort after another poor result - 1-1

Chelsea replaced Enzo Maresca with Liam Rosenior, and their results slightly improved, but one massive problem is still there, and even the new gaffer doesn’t seem capable of solving it - the Blues can’t stop receiving red cards!

For the sixth time in the current EPL campaign, the London side’s player - Wesley Fofana, today - was sent off, as they are the most “undisciplined” team in the league.

Burnley were pretty uninspired today, and the game itself was quite boring and uneventful after Joao Pedro’s fourth-minute opener. It seemed that the Blues would survive the Frenchman’s 72nd-minute blunder and defend the advantage, but the punishment came in the third minute of added time, embodied in Zian Flemming and his late leveller - 1-1.

Simply, Rosenior and his men have to work on responsibility and discipline on the pitch. If not, these punishments will be much more frequent and even more painful.

When Joao Pedro broke the deadlock and put Chelsea in front just four minutes into the game, following Moises Caicedo's defence-splitting pass and Pedro Neto's assist, the crowd at Stamford Bridge must have expected fireworks until the break. What they got was completely the opposite.

As if the Blues were satisfied with the early lead, they rarely posed a concrete threat to Burnley's goal. Their biggest chance came after Kyle Walker's blunder, when Cole Palmer faced Martin Dubravka one-on-one, but the Clarets' keeper saved his team.

On the other hand, the visitors weren't focused solely on defence. On the contrary, they threatened, mainly from set pieces, but did nothing that would worry Robert Sanchez or the home fans.

The match continued in the same slow rhythm after the break as well, though in this period, the ball was constantly around Burnley's box. The visitors played as if they were the ones in the lead, but, at the same time, easily coped with Chelsea's uninspired attacks.

In the 72nd minute the "snoozefest" at Stamford Bridge was finally broken by "the Blues special" - a red card! For the sixth time this season (most in the Premier league), the London side was set to finish the game with a man down, as Wesley Fofana was sent off, receiving a second yellow card. Liam Rosenior instantly subbed on Tosin Adarabioyo for Palmer, hinting at his team's tough battle to defend its lead in the final 15-20 minutes.

The tables immediately turned, as now Burnley were the team in control. At first, the Clarets seemed far from the eventual leveller, but the Blues' lack of discipline on the pitch had to be punished and that punishment came in the worst possible moment - in added time.

Following James Ward-Prowse's 93rd-minute corner kick, Zian Flemming outsmarted the home team's defenders, salvaging a draw for Burnley with a perfect header, and leaving the packed Stamford Bridge stunned.
