Former Manchester United manager is among top two choices for the relegation battling club
Things didn’t work out with Vítor Pereira, and the club management has finally decided to dismiss him. In place of the Portuguese coach, who failed to win a single one of his first ten Premier League matches, the new head coach of Wolverhampton is expected to be Gary O’Neil. But suddenly reliable The Athletic brought in an exclusive news – Erik ten Hag is in the mix to be the next managers.

Most British media were reporting the former Wolves manager will return to Molineux Stadium less than a year after being sacked. That happened in December 2024, following four consecutive league defeats that dropped the team to second from bottom. Now the team is once again at the bottom of the table, and there were good reasons for another change — even earlier, some would say — since Wolves are the only team in the competition without a win, having collected just two points, and face a hellish battle to avoid relegation.

O’Neil knows how to handle such situations. Before being dismissed, during the 2023/24 campaign — his first full season in charge of Wolves — he led them to a 14th-place finish in the Premier League and a quarterfinal appearance in the FA Cup. Given his familiarity with the club and the fact that he has already worked with most of the players, Gary seems like a reasonable solution. But now the former Manchester United manager is in frame. This would be his first managerial job where avoiding relegation would be the utimate goal. So far, he challenged league titles (Ajax) or battled for the Champions League (Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen).
This would be Ten Hag‘s return to the Premier League where he was sacked by Manchester United due to poor results even thou he won two cups with the Red Devils. He was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games and 62 days in charge and hasn‘t been mentioned in any managerial options since. Gary O’Neil hasn‘t trained anyone after his last sack, which was Wolverhampton, even thou he had offers from Championship clubs to take over. Wolves should decided between two man soon, as they need to register the new boss until Saturday, when the game with Chelsea should take place.
