Surprise! This guy chose Senegal over Spain

The talented player, Assane Diao, has decided that he will represent Senegal, the country of his birth, in senior football, instead of Spain, for which he played during the younger part of his career. Diao has earned his first senior call-up for a set of international matches in March.

He will be part of the Senegal national team for the upcoming games against Sudan and Togo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on March 22 and 25, joining stars like Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Sadio Mane.

Diao had previously played for Spain's U18, U19, and U21 teams while also playing for Real Betis, but he decided to make a change regarding his senior career. According to current FIFA regulations, players are allowed to switch national teams at the senior level if they have not played more than three matches before the age of 21, have not participated in the final stage of a major tournament, and have not played an international match for at least three years. Since Diao is only 19 years old, three appearances in the next 18 months will mean that Senegal will be his permanent national team choice.

The talent has made significant progress since he joined Italian club from Real Betis in a transfer worth 12 million euros in January. Since then, he has scored 5 goals in his first 10 appearances in Serie A.

He will have the opportunity to improve his club performance before the international break in tonight's match against Milan at San Siro (20.00).
