Ayunga, 28, collected a fine pass from his fellow striker Mikael Mandron just after the half-hour mark to finish past England keeper Jack Butland, giving his side a surprise lead against Russell Martin's Rangers.

The goal was the first St. Mirren had scored in the Premiership this season, following an opening day 1-0 loss to reigning champions Celtic, and a barren draw against Motherwell on 9 August.

The Kenyan international, who also scored against Rangers last season, ended up playing for 69 minutes, and was the first St Mirren man to be substituted off, with youngster Evan Mooney coming on.

St. Mirren however failed to hold on for what would have been their first win of the season as Findlay Curtis scored with 12 minutes remaining to end the game all square.

Ayunga’s goal was his first this season, and while he looked a handful, his manager Stephen Robinson still made sure to mention that he needed a striker before the transfer window closes.

In an interview with BBC after the game, Robinson expressed disappointment in his side drawing, saying: “We felt we had enough chances that we could have got three points. We lost a little control in the game because we didn't contain the ball as much.

Our two centre forwards tired, which is something we have to get better at. We don't have another striker at the minute that we can put on.”

He added: "We believe in getting our better players on the ball quicker, and we're not going to deviate from that. We need a really quick striker."

Ayunga in April gave up life-changing offers to extend his contract at St. Mirren, and is now in his final season with the club.
