Tottenham will have to work hard to replace their want-away stars
For a few months, there were rumours of Harry Kane wanting to leave Tottenham Hotspur. The stories were true. He has confirmed that he wants to switch clubs as soon as possible because he wants to compete at a higher level and win trophies. But how to replace such an important player? An easy option would be to pursue a part-exchange deal.
Tottenham’s chief executive Daniel Levy is a shrewd businessman. He always has a potential deal up his sleeve as he faces the daunting task of finding a suitable player to lead the Spurs attack. One way to secure a deal is to sign a player from the club that ends up buying Kane. At this stage, the candidates are Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus and United’s forward Anthony Martial.
The financial crisis in the age of Covid dictates many aspects of the football market, and paying colossal transfer fees is one of the most obvious ones. Spurs seem set on getting around $210 million for their best player, a sum that even the biggest and wealthiest clubs won’t couch up easily. Arranging an exchange deal could prove a suitable way for them to save some money and keep their wage expenditure down.

Levy has a history of bad-tempered negotiations with United over Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. The deal that took Kyle Walker to City four years ago was not a smooth one either. He is not too keen on doing business with either Manchester club, but he will have to go along with it to avoid keeping a disgruntled star on his books.
Gabriel Jesus’s had a mixed season with Premier League champions Manchester City this term. The 24-year-old Brazilian managed just eight goals in 21 starts for the sky blues, making it a total of 81 goals in 193 appearances over five years since his arrival to England. He’s got another two years on his contract.
Anthony Martial, France international of Guadeloupean descent, has been a Manchester United player since September 2015 when he’d become the world’s most expensive teenager. He’s had flashes of quality in the past years, but he never quite reached the heights he seemed destined. Still only 25, he’s got plenty of time to live up to the hype that’s been surrounding him since he made his Monaco debut in 2013. During his career at Old Trafford, he’s made 347 appearances and scored 78 goals.
Either of those two players could be a hit for Tottenham in the coming years, but first things first. Harry Kane will have to choose his next club before Levy gets to do his magic in the transfer market.
