The time has come for the final countdown (1 PM)

After a month of thrilling action, it's time for the FIFA Women's World Cup Final. Spain meets England in a Sidney showdown, with both sides fighting for their first-ever World Cup trophy. Exactly 16 years after Germany's triumph at the 2007 World Cup, the trophy will fly again to Europe.

Spain have had an unforgettable journey through the tournament, which got off to a great start for La Furia Roja with comfortable wins over Costa Rica and Zambia. However, a heavy 4-0 loss to Japan in the last group game has brought a huge question mark and debate over whether this Spanish side is capable of anything big.

Spain had to show their fighting qualities in the quarter-final against the Netherlands as they conceded a stoppage-time equaliser before Salma Parralluelo scored the winner in extra-time to set up a semi-final clash against Sweden, who eliminated former winners USA and Japan.

Spain looked set to throw away a golden opportunity to reach the final when Rebecca Blomqvist cancelled out Paralluelo's goal just two minutes from time, but La Furia Roja quickly regained the lead through Olga Carmona, who secured Spain's place in the final with a superb long-range strike.

On the other hand, England are preparing to appear in the final of a major tournament for the second consecutive year, following their success at the EURO. With the Lionesses taking the maximum number of points in the group stage, the draw took them to Nigeria in the round of 16, where they had tougher nerves than the Africans and progressed only on penalties.

Goals from Lauren Hamp and Alessia Russo led the European champions to a 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia, setting up a tricky semi-final clash against one of the tournament's hosts, Australia.

There is no doubt that the two best teams in the past four weeks have deservedly reached the battle for the gold medal. So, let's get this (farewell) party started!
