National Super League (NSL) newcomers Soy United have appointed former KCB FC assistant coach Jeffers Odongo as their new head coach.

The decision to appoint Jeffers is driven by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) coaching requirements as Soy embark on a new challenge in the second tier.

The change comes with FKF regulations stipulating that all second-tier head coaches must possess a CAF B License.

Soy United’s promotion-winning tactician, Samuel Twago, only holds a CAF C License, making him ineligible to continue as the team’s head coach despite steering them to a historic second promotion back to NSL.

As a result, the club turned to Odongo, while Twago will now serve as assistant coach in the restructured technical bench.

"The club acquired the services of coach Jeffers Odongo as the new head coach. This was due to FKF regulations regarding head coach badges, with our then coach, Samuel Twago, missing the needed licence since he holds a C.

The club equally brought in Odongo to steer us ahead of the new season, as we believe his vision aligns with ours.

He has been a long-term prime target for the club, given his proven involvement in youth development, his strong relationship with coach Twago—whom he played alongside during their playing days, and his experience, which matches our ambitions for the season.

We believe this partnership will seamlessly blend to guide us to success," explained the club patron Edwin Ayiro.

Odongo brings with him a wealth of experience and returns to head coaching duties after two seasons of working as an assistant.

He previously deputised head coach Patrick Odhiambo at Kakamega Homeboyz, where they won the 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup before taking up a similar role at KCB last season.

His last stint as head coach was with Wazito FC, prior to its takeover and rebranding as Muhoroni Youth in 2023.

Soy United’s preparations, however, face an additional hurdle off the pitch. The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) has temporarily halted the start of the National Super League, which was scheduled to kick off on Saturday, 13 September.

The tribunal also quashed Soy United’s promotion, along with that of Compel SC, pending the determination of a case involving Gucha FC and Nakuru Bucks.

The dispute stems from Gucha’s successful appeal against FKF’s decision to deduct points from them for allegedly fielding an ineligible player in their fixture against Nakuru Bucks.

The matter is set for a final ruling on Monday, 15 September.
