The goalkeeper returns to the national team

Andre Onana is set to make his return to the Cameroonian national team, nine months after his shocking departure during the World Cup. Nine months after withdrawing from the World Cup due to a dispute with his coach, Rigobert Song, Manchester United's goalkeeper Onana has been called up to the Cameroonian national team to play in a qualifying match for the upcoming AFCON against Burundi on 12 September.

During last year's World Cup in Qatar, Onana's departure from the team after the first group stage defeat to Switzerland, just days before the crucial match against Brazil, left Cameroon and football observers bewildered. A disagreement with Song following a remark made by Song during a training session led to Onana leaving the training.

The following day, he did not return to the team, citing a groin injury. This behaviour resulted in a suspension by the Cameroonian Football Federation, led by Samuel Eto'o. Frustrated, Onana announced his retirement from international football at only 26 years old.

However, during a press conference in Yaounde on Monday, Song officially announced Onana's return to the national team.

"There has never been a problem with Onana. The door has always remained open, and we are all happy to see him back with the team."

The Indomitable Lions only need a draw against Burundi to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in January next year.
