Some divorces don't come cheap - United to pay Amorim €44 million

And these figures don't even include the salary the Red Devils paid him during his time at Old Trafford

Almost two months have passed since Ruben Amorim was dismissed, but it feels like ancient history.

For that illusion, Michael Carrick deserves most of the credit. Thanks to him and the results he has engineered, Manchester United supporters have managed to push aside the gloom that had engulfed the fallen English giant.

United have won five of their last six Premier League matches. Under Carrick, they are unbeaten. If the table were calculated solely from the moment the interim manager took charge, the Old Trafford side would be top.

Amorim may be gone, but the debts attached to him remain, and the Red Devils will have to pay every last cent.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club's hierarchy pulled the trigger in early January. At the time, the compensation package was reported to be around €12 million.

The reality? Far heavier.

The final cost is expected to spiral to a staggering €44 million, which will be the final price of his dismissal. When United decided to bring Amorim in, they paid €11 million to Sporting Lisbon to release him before his contract expired. Before that, they had already compensated Erik ten Hag with €15 million to terminate his deal.

Add to that roughly €18 million in early termination costs, currently listed as "reserved funds."

The total climbs to around €44 million, and that figure does not even include the salary United paid Amorim during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.

A breathtaking sum altogether - all for 25 wins in 63 matches.
