Legendary striker and former Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko has become the new boss of the Italian underdogs

Shevchenko in Italy? Well, in 1999, it proved to be a match made in heaven.

So, the Ukrainian football legend has decided to land on the coast of the Ligurian Sea and try his coaching luck in the same country where he became a household name decades ago.

The "only difference" is that then-Milan was a ruthless, money-spinning machine packed with stars from all over the world, which definitely helped Sheva in reaching unprecedented heights in the early '00s.

Unlike Rossonerri, Genoa FC was and up to this day still is a very modest side with levels of ambition way below AC Milan.

The 45-year-old Shevchenko will replace Davide Ballardini, who was sacked on Saturday. The Ukrainian coach signed a deal until 2024 and will do his best to save the Serie A strugglers from getting relegated.

Genoa are currently 18th in Serie A after 12 games, having picked up one win all season.

Shevchenko, who retired from playing in 2012, led Ukraine to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 but left his job in August 2021.
