Battle-hardened central defender Harun Shakava has vowed to use his experience and help Nzoia Sugar unhook themselves from the jaws of relegation.
Shavaka, alongside forward David Simiyu caught many by surprise after the duo joined the bottom-placed Nzoia on loan from Kenya Police earlier in the week.
Nzoia went for the experienced duo in an attempt to rack up points from the remaining matches and keep their slot in the ‘table of men’.
Last season, the sugarmen were on top of their game, finishing fourth but the exit of their best players in the off-season transfer window left them exposed.
Shakava who has won the Kenyan league five times hopes to inject his experience into the team and help miss a date with the axe.
“My job at Nzoia is simple, add experience to the team and help as much as possible to beat relegation. Obviously, I can’t do it alone but will try my best to inspire the team to safety,” he told Mozzart Sport.
The league-winning defender with Gor Mahia acknowledged that the move will afford him the opportunity to play regularly.
Shakava had fallen down the pecking order at Police despite his experience and leadership skills but he believes that he will enjoy the uninterrupted flow of game time at Nzoia, following the move.
His last competitive appearance at Police was on December 3 against debutants Murang’a Seal where he came on as a substitute.
The defender, who won the Zambian Super League title with Nkana in 2020, could make his Nzoia debut on Saturday against Posta Rangers.
“I might have played in the league for years but believe me, I still have the burning desire for regular playing time,” he said.
The move to Nzoia could have felt like a downgrade for a player of Shakava’a calibre but to him, it means a lot in as far.
“There is nothing wrong with changing environment. Nzoia is closer home as well,” joked the former Kakamega Homeboyz star.
