SCHOOL GAMES: Wiyeta and Madira Girls take off to a strong start

Wiyeta edged Lwak Girls 2-1 while Madira thrashed Mbitini 7-0 in their opening matches of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term 2 B games

National School Games defending champions Wiyeta Girls and Western Region runners up Madira Girls got their football girls title hunt off to a flying start after recording impressive wins as the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) term two nationals school games got underway at Kakamega School in Kakamega County on Tuesday.

Madira, popularly known as Soccer Assassins thrashed Eastern Region champions Mbitini 7-0 in a thrilling Pool B opener.

The Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League side opened the scoring charts in the 5th minute through Charity Midewa and continued with the onslaught five minutes later through the red hot Valerie Nekesa who doubled the scores before Midewa added a second with thirty minutes on the clock .

The Vihiga county champions proved too strong aganist the Eastern Region representatives with Midewa scoring her hat trick in the dying minutes of the first half before Nekesa hit a brace to take the game far from Mbitini reach as the two sides headed to the break with Madira leading 5-0 .

Less was to come in the second half as Mbitini looked more composed blocking all Assassins moves from the midfield though it was not enough to deny Midewa her fourth of the game as she latched on a long ball to slot home Madira's sixth before Faith Atieno rounded up the scores for the Vihiga County Safaricom Chapa Dimba winners.

In a post - match interview with Mozzart Sport, Madira head Coach Nick Muleri was full of praise for his charges but warned them not to sleep on their laurels.

" I am taking one game at a time. We are now focusing on our next game ,all teams in our pool are very good; we don't fear anyone but we respect them," said Muleri .

In other matches, defending Champions Wiyeta Girls came from behind to avoid Nyanza Region winners Lwak Girls scare as they humbled them 2-1 .

Wiyeta tactician Edgar Manyara is upbeat they will successfully defend their title and clinch the East African title that elapsed them last year.

"It is not a matter of here or there ; we will win this title . I have a good squad and I am sure we will sail through to the next level as group leaders and clinch this title," an optimistic Manyara told the press.

At Mukumu Boys grounds ,Red Commandos of Butere Girls' started on a bad foot as they were held to a one one draw by Nairobi region representatives Dagoretti mixed secondary School .

Meanwhile, three time East Africa volleyball champions Kwanthanze of Machakos County started their quest to retain their girl's title on a high downing Vyambani by 3-0 straight sets in an entertaining tie .

Kwanthanze which is renowned for producing potent talents saw off the Coast side in sets of 25-7,25-14 and 25-10.

Elsewhere, Western region champions Mwitoti obliterated Nyanza representatives Nyakach three sets to nil of 20-25,23-25 and 21-25 as Kesogon humbled Karima three sets of 14-25 ,4-25 and 6-25.

In the boys category ,Rift Valley champions Andersen laboured to a three set to nil victory over Onjiko of 27-29,22-25 and 16-25 .

Action is expected to continue on Wednesday across Mukumu Boys, Kakamega School and Kakamega Approved with basketball action slated to kick off on Thursday .
