School Games: St Anthony's stun Dagoretti to reclaim national football title

Kibet was the hero of the game

St. Anthony's Boys’ High School, Kitale have clinched the 2023 national school games football title after defeating Dagoretti High School 2-0 thanks to a brace from the on-song Aldrine Kibet.

Both teams reached the final with an unblemished record therefore setting up a mouthwatering clash for the thousands of fans who thronged the Bukhungu Stadium.

Dagoretti made the cut to the finals after staging a 100 percent record in the previous encounters at the national level while the Solidarity Boys conceded a goal in the process to the championship battle.

In a one-sided match staged in front of fans from all walks of life among them Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs Ababu Namwamba, St. Anthony’s dominated every aspect of the game from the early stages and it paid off in the 21st minute after Kibet beat Dagoretti centre backs to break the deadlock

The Peter Mayoyo-coached side, who were hunting for their sixth national title, toyed around with Dagoretti midfield overpowering them but, could not get past the acrobatic Nairobi ambassadors goalkeeper who kept them in the play for a better part of the match.

Dagoretti came back stronger in the second stanza unleashing a series of attacks, but Amos Wanjala who anchored the defence cleared the mos.

Kibet unleashed a thunderbolt in the 88th minute to double Solidarity's lead and send a mammoth crowd at Bukhungu into frenzy.

The win hands the Solidarity Boys a sixth record Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national games title and deny Dagoretti a chance to get revenge over the 2019 final defeat at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

In an early kick off staged at the same venue, Friends School Shanderema annihilated Agoro Sare five goals to one to advance to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games set for Huye,Rwanda.

Under the tutelage of Kevin Asuba, Shanderema stormed the regional games thanks to a brace from Kelly Madada as Maxwell Wamalwa,Nickson Mutimi and Collins Kati netted a goal apiece.

The Western region ambassadors, who are gracing the nationals for the first time in school's history, are joined by St Anthony's and Dagoretti High in the East Africa Secondary Schools Games.
