SCHOOL GAMES : Defending Champions Wiyeta held by Madira Girls

Wiyeta Girls and Madira Girls put up a spirited fight as they played to a one-all draw at the ongoing National School Games in Kakamega County on Wednesday.

With Wiyeta downing Lwak Girls on Tuesday and Madira also picking a 7-0 victory over Mbitini,both sides went into the clash needing a win to confirm a place in the last four with a match at hand.

Soccer Assassins net buster Valerie Nekesa struck the opener with less than a minute on the clock at the Bukhungu Stadium after a lovely one-two exchange with Charity Midewa.

Wiyeta looked composed after Nekesa's effort but were unable to break through the fatigued Assassins defenders as the match headed into the breather with the Vihiga County champions leading a goal to nil.

The Kenya Women's Division One golden boot winner goal was, however, cancelled five minutes from the restart with Edna Wauda restoring parity for the Edgar Manyara-coached side.

Madira quickly settled into the game and created openings of their own forcing Velma Auma into making acrobatic saves to deny the lethal duo of Nekesa and Midewa ensuring the two football powerhouses shared spoils to blow wide open the semi finals spots.

Madira stand-in coach Francis Muhambe was full of praise for his charges noting that they stuck to his tactics despite not collecting maximum points.

"My tactics worked today but we were a little bit sloppy while attacking and forgot to recover quickly which might have been attributed to fatigue from my girls," said Muhambe.

On his side, Edgar Manyara lauded his girls for holding off the newly promoted Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League outfit but demanded more from the defending champions.

In another Pool B match, Lwak Girls from Nyanza bounced back from opening day 2-1 stumble to Wiyeta Girls with a 4-1 humiliation of Mbitini Girls to keep alive their hopes of gracing the girls football category semis.

After today's matches in Pool B, Madira still seat at the helm of the standings level on points with Wiyeta though boast of a superior goal difference while Lwak settle third one point behind the lead group.

Elsewhere, Red Commandos of Butere Girls' earned their first three points of the on going school games after thumping newbies Kombani 5-0 to move summit of Pool A on four points as Dagoretti Mixed stunned Njambini to improve their chances of qualifying to the next stage of the highly contested National Games.

Volleyball

Reigning champions Kwanthanze marched into the semi finals of the Volleyball girls' discipline as the hunt for a fourth consecutive National title intensified after edging out Senior Chief to three straight sets of 5-25,2-25 and 3-25.

Rift Valley volleyball champions Kesogon girls also booked a spot in the last four after outshining Nyakach Girls three sets without response of 25-19,25-17 and 25-10

In other girls results ,Mwitoti had an easy run facing off Karima winning three sets to nil of 25-14,25-13 and 25-13 while Vyambani bowed out of the competition shifting in three sets of 11-25,10-25,14-25 to Soweto.
