The former Kenya Police coach will be in charge on Sunday for his first match when City Stars travels away to Bandari

New Nairobi City Stars coach Salim Babu has praised his predecessor Nicholas Muyoti for building the team into a formidable side.

Babu officially took over the reins at the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) side this week.

Despite the team’s poor run in the league, Babu says he is impressed with the players he has found.

“After leaving Kenya Police I was really looking forward to getting back to the Premier League as fast as possible and City Stars came at the right time. I have been with the team for a few days and what I can say is that Muyoti left quite a good team. He did a good job and it looks like they have just been unlucky,” he said.

Babu said his biggest target is to get the team out of the relegation zone and then plan for better results next season.

“Nairobi City Stars are not a small team when you consider their performance in the last two seasons. That is where they need to go back to. For now, our focus is to get out of the relegation fight, then we can plan from there,” he added.

Babu will be in charge on Sunday for his first match when the team travels away to Bandari.

“The match against Bandari is very critical for us. It will give me an idea on which areas to strengthen in the second leg," he added.

Muyoti resigned from the club on January 11 after the team lost 2-1 to Posta Rangers.

He cited a need for bigger challenges as one of his reasons for stepping down, and has since joined National Super League (NSL) side Nairobi United.

Babu brings a great wealth of experience to City Stars, having handled Kenya Police and Nzoia Sugar previously.

He is also the head coach of the national under-20 team.
