The French defender will become one of the biggest earners in Munich
Out of nothing, the January transfer window in Munich turned into a soap opera because of Dayot Upamecano’s status at Bayern. At first, everything seemed normal — there was mutual interest in continuing the partnership, Vincent Kompany saw the solid Frenchman as an indispensable part of the back line — and then, suddenly, the situation began to heat up. Upamecano demanded a salary increase to 20,000,000 euros per season, while Bayern were prepared to offer 15,000,000 euros.

Negotiations started to drag on, and the situation was well described by the club’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen: “He should know that if you chew gum for too long, the flavor gradually disappears. I hope these negotiations won’t turn into chewing gum.” It seemed at one point that everything would collapse, mainly due to the agents' greed, but in the end, an agreement was reached. The soap opera is over — Upamecano has extended his contract with the Bavarians until 2030.
His annual salary will ultimately amount to 20,000,000, while the release clause has been set at 65,000,000, as previously agreed. About a month ago, the final obstacle to the deal was cleared when the Supervisory Board approved the payment of an additional 20 million euros in managerial compensation and signing bonuses.
In fact, it was Upamecano who saved the whole situation. The former Leipzig player decided to take matters into his own hands, called the club officials, and said he accepted all the terms. After that, even the agents could do nothing — and they, too, are satisfied. Everyone is pleased that the entire saga has finally come to an end.
“I’m really happy to be staying at Bayern and continuing to play in this team. We’ve got a great team and a great coach. We’ve got big goals together. In life, it’s always about mentality. I give my all for my teammates, in every training session, want to keep a clean sheet in every game and want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern” said the French defender after he signed the extension.
