Sadio Mane Stadium - now that's a home town tribute

After the forward inspired Senegal to their first ever AFCON triumph, Liverpool and Senegal star will have a stadium after him

Even before the historic win in Cameroon, Sadio Mane was considered a legend of Senegalese football. But with the AFCON trophy being won by the Lions of Teranga for the first time, he status became iconic. The west African nation are further underlining Mane's talismanic status with a fitting tribute.

A stadium in Mane's home town of Sedhiou will be named after their team's best player and with that the continental success with his national team at this year's African Cup of Nations will be forever remembered.

After slotting home the decisive penalty in the Teranga Lions' triumph over Egypt in the tense final - Liverpool forward sealed the epithet of a hero in his country.

He was equally prolific across the course of the showpiece in Cameroon, having added three goals to his tally and picked up two assists.

The mayor of Sedhiou - Abdoulaye Diop - has revealed that a new ground in the town will be dedicated to the the 29-year-old superstar.

'Sadio Mane has honoured all of Senegal, the Sedhiou region and the entire Casamance area,' Diop said.

'I have decided to name the Sedhiou stadium after him.

'In doing so I wish to convey the gratitude of all the sons and daughters of the region towards him.

'He has made all of mankind aware of Bambali and Sedhiou, the region's main town.

'This is a gift that Sadio Mane truly deserves.'

With the stadium under construction at the moment - the official opening and naming should happen next year.

Mane and his team-mates were hailed as heroes and Senegal's victory unsurprisingly sparked wild scenes of celebration across the capital of Dakar.
