Rise of the machines: VAR denies referee's final whistle in the La Liga tie

Four minutes of the stoppage time were announced in the fixture between Seville and Granada, but when the ref whistled for the end after only three minutes, a bizzare epilogue happened

The La Liga tie between Seville and Granada on Sunday had an unorthodox end, indeed. Soldado's goal for Granada coming seconds before the stoppage time tightened the match at 2-1 and brought tension to the last moments. The ref De Burgos Bengoetxea then decided to add four more minutes but whistled the end a minute earlier.

Some Granada players protested while others left. On the other hand, all Seville players left the pitch. There was even the usual exchange of shirts, and some footballers took off their boots or shin guards. But then a true anticlimax started. De Burgos Bengoetxea amended his initial mistake after VAR consultancy and ordered everyone to return to play the remaining minute?!

So it actually happened, bringing no change on the scoreboard, however. Even so, the scene will go around the world as unusual, to put it politely.
