Atletico Madrid losses, making the season finale in Spain as thrilling as it gets
You've probably heard that there's nothing so exciting in European football - at least after the Super League shut down - like the Spanish title chase. It was a classical three-horse race until tonight, but from midnight, that number is four! Yes, four contenders and only a few rounds left.
Seville won against Granada (2-1), and the table-toppers Atletico Madrid lost at Bilbao (2-1), making the last part of the season as thrilling as it gets.
Now, Diego Simeone's outfit is the first with 73 points, Barcelona and Real Madrid have 71, with the Blaugrana side being the only one with one game less played so far. Finally, there is Seville, with 70 points and plenty of things to hope for in the upcoming weeks.
In the fixture of the two slots with very similar names, Athletic Bilbao won after a true anticlimax.
Athletic broke the deadlock after only eight minutes, thanks to a beautiful build-up, with Alex Berenguer acting as a crucial man from the beginning until the end - his lovely header was way too good for Oblak to stop it.
Carasco tried to even the things in the following minute, but Oblak's counterpart was confident on the line. Soon it was Corea to engage in the Bilbao's box, his first touch was out of this world, but the finishing was on a non-league level.
Unlike the title contenders, the home team were focused on defending their one-goal lead yet managed to get a hold on a ball near Madrid's goal, with Villalibre's and Sancet's effort going slightly off the target. That was about all for the first half.
Shortly after the break, Simeone decided to bring in his fiercest firepower from the bench, with as many as three subs simultaneously - Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar and Luis Suarez. It proved to be the right move, although none of them entered the scoresheet. It was an unlikely hero, the defender Stevan Savic who netted only his third goal since joining Atletico years ago.
It seemed the game would end in a draw, but the Spanish international Inigo Martinez had different plans for this night. His exceptional header knocked down the opponents five minutes before the final whistle, leaving Simeone's boys in desperation.
