From the season 2007-28, we could have Super League, Europa League and Aspiring League

Only two years after a handful of super-strong European football clubs failed to launch their very own Super League, the news of an entirely new Super League - this time under the control of UEFA itself - has shaken the entire continent.

According to the leading Spanish newspaper El Pais, the European Football Federation, in collaboration with the European Club Association (ECA), is apparently refining the idea of its own Super League: it will be made of 18 teams, with two more divisions, also comprised of 18 clubs each. Apparently, they will be called - Super League, Europa League and Aspiring League. Between the second and third, there would be four promotions and relegations.

In order to bring the project to life - which should begin at the start of the 2027-28 season, some issues clearly need to be resolved. Taking part in 34 European matches would be a disaster for the calendar. The idea would be to divide each division into two groups before a final stage. Then there is the problem of the national leagues and their accordance with the newly-created competitions.

The speculations are circulating that winning the domestic title or a good position in your league could be worth some financial bonuses and perhaps more points in the Super League standings.

"Clubs could also expand their rosters to 34 players to compete on the European and domestic front," adds El Pais. "And then, one of the most heartfelt topics: weekends dedicated to European competitions or national ones? As time goes by, a tournament of this type will inevitably 'invade' the weekends. The hypothesis is on the table, now all that remains is to understand if the pieces of this intricate puzzle will fit together," concludes the Spanish newspaper.

A revolution or just a hoax? We'll find out very soon.
