Revenge is best served cold! Fox-hunter Rudiger and penalty specialist Jorginho propel Chelsea to third
Reading Time: 4min | Wed. 19.05.21. | 00:15
A match full of opportunities and palpable tension ended up with Chelsea skipping over Leicester at the Premier League table
Chelsea hold their faith in their own hands. They took revenge and collected all three points against Leicester City. Final score at Stamford Bridge 2-1.
The Blues had vengeance firmly in mind after defeat to Leicester in last Saturday’s FA Cup final. Victory was an imperative for Thomas Tuchel's crew and they opened up the game in such a manner. Like their life depended on it.
Ben Chilwell had a chance in the 4th minute already as he turned his man nicely inside the box but placed his effort just wide of the right post.
In the 18th minute, Chelsea fans were screaming for a penalty as Timo Werner went down after a coming together with Youri Tielemans as the Leicester man was trying to clear the ball inside his own box. Belgian did connect with Werner's calf as the German reached the ball first but referee Mike Dean decided to award a free kick for the visitors.
Four minutes later, German striker had his first disallowed goal of the evening due to offside.
Chelsea's best player of the season Mason Mount tried himself in the 28th minute but his shot went, instead into the roof of the net, over the bar to the fan-filled stands.
Werner's second disallowed goal of the first half happened in the 35th minute as his header that pushed the ball over the line turned out to be a hand effort.
A couple of attempts by Mount and Christian Pulisic were not enough for Chelsea to take the deserved lead in the first 45 minutes.
But what they couldn't do in the first, they did straight away in the second half. Front three failed to find the back of the back of the net so Antonio Rudiger stepped up to bring advantage for the hosts.
Chilwell's corner brushes off the top of Jamie Vardy's head and Rudiger times his run to perfection to bundle the ball over the line at the back post.
Each of Rudiger's last three Premier League goals have all come against Leicester City, accounting for 50% of his total goal tally in the competition (3/6).
Chelsea took the foot off the gas after the goal, passing between the defenders and the midfielders took over.
And out of nowhere, Chelsea had a penalty given. Werner was taken down inside the box and it was the 5th penalty that was ruled after the German was fouled.
He may have missed 18 'big' chances so far but he has brought a lot to this Chelsea side since arriving.
Jorginho calmly hopped-skipped and sent Kasper Schmeichel the other way.
First shot on goal for Leicester happened in the 70th minute - and it was not a dangerous one.
Chelsea were not as intense as before the lead and Leicester did not really attack as hard as everyone expected, given that a defeat would bring them into a tricky ending to the season.
Out of nowhere, Leicester cut Chelsea's lead in half. Who else than Kelechi Iheanacho. This man did something no one ever did - he scored on every day of the week in one season.
Mateo Kovacic gave the ball away ahead of Nigerian's strike and the Foxes made use of that immediately.
Leicester's press brought the game to an interesting ending. Ayoze Perez had a massive opportunity in the 90th minute but his shot went to the top row of the Stamford Bridge stands.
A lot of tension and yellow cards to close the match off as the three points stay ion London.
This Chelsea win see them move a point above Leicester going into the final weekend. Blues hold 3rd spot with 67 points, Foxes have a point less and Liverpool have 63 with a game short.
