The La Liga 2 side on Tuesday, 31 March, designated his setback as a “muscular injury to the back of his left thigh”, but did not offer a clear date in which he is expected to be back on the field.

Instead, the Real Sociedad Medical Service wrote on their website: “His return to the team will depend on the progress of his recovery process.”

Ochieng, 23, sustained the injury while on duty for Harambee Stars, during their first FIFA Series 2026 friendly against Estonia in Rwanda on Friday, 27 March.

The winger had started the match on a bright note, only to be hooked off after only 42 minutes, when he went down clutching his left hamstring.

Speaking to the media ahead of Kenya’s second friendly against Grenada on Sunday, 29 March, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy confirmed the youngster had travelled back to Spain to get a proper assessment on his injury.

“I think Job came off. He had a little bit of a strain on his hamstring,” McCarthy said then. “We sent him to medical, he did a scan, and it came out fine. It’s nothing serious, just a little rest and a lay-off.”

As it stands, Ochieng’s return to club action remains up in the air, halting his recent run of form that had seen him score six goals in his last six games for the club.

The former Ligi Ndogo forward, after missing out on Real Sociedad’s 5-1 loss to Almeria, at this moment also looks set to miss out on Thursday night’s clash with Eibar at San Sebastian.

Should Ocheing’s injury prove severe, Real Sociedad B could benefit from significant compensation as outlined under the FIFA Club Protection Programme.

In a specific scenario that Ochieng is sidelined for more than 28 consecutive days, the Spanish side could receive a daily payment from FIFA, calculated on a pro-rata basis, capped at €20,548 per day (around Ksh 3.1 million).

The total compensation per injury can reach up to €7.5 million (around Ksh1.2 billion), offering significant financial relief in the event of a long-term absence.
