Real Madrid soundly defeated – what now?

Florentino Perez doesn't have a striker, but has 200 million euros saved

Saturday was a shock for Real Madrid, executives, and fans worldwide. The most trophied club in Europe, arguably the best club globally, was ’betrayed’ by one of the most promising footballers and a future star – Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman, who is a huge Real Madrid fan (isn’t that ironic), turned down his beloved club for the third time (2012, 2017 and now) and almost certainly closed the door for his appearance in Madrid forever. He sent a WhatsApp message to president Florentino Perez on Saturday morning. He received a ’good luck message from the man himself, and now, Real is left without a possible cornerstone of the third generation of Galacticos, battered and bruised from a betrayal. What is next for Real?

Well, the first who reacted was Spanish La Liga. In a press release, they announced that they are filing a complaint against PSG before UEFA, the French administrative and tax authorities and before the European Union against PSG after the "possible extension of Kylian Mbappé". Against the backdrop of the principles of financial fair play.

What PSG is going to do by re-signing Mbappe with large amounts of money after losing 700 million euros in the last seasons and having 600 million euros in salary tables is an INSULT to football. Al-Khelaifi is as dangerous as the Super League” said president Javier Tebas.

But, let’s just remember that Florentino Perez went into the ’war’ with UEFA and Alexander Cheferin over the Super League, so expecting that Europe’s highest governing body will punish PSG president Al-Khelaifi, who was against Super League, is amateurish. UEFA will find a way to stay neutral or avoid punishing PSG. But what will Real do?

First of all, they need to win the Champions League. That’s the most important thing in the world for them. After that, they will start their transfer window with 200 million euros more, which they committed to Mbappe. But, with both Mbappe and Erling Haaland going, they don’t have a proper replacement at the striker position, so it looks more likely that Benzema – Vinicius combination will be the main option for Real in 2022. Or, they could go for the ’new kid on the block’ - Benfica's Darwin Nunez.

Rudiger has arrived from Chelsea and Madrid would like to bring another left-back, which means the Royal club could approach Jose Gaya and Marcos Alonso, defenders from Valencia and Chelsea. Another name which was already mentioned was Aurelien Tchouameni, a super talented midfielder from Monaco, and it was widely expected that due to financial commitments for Mbappe, he will be targeted by Madrid next season. Still, now, they can come after him straight away. And they will have a strong rival for his signature – PSG. They can also try to take Dembele from Barcelona or lure Mohamed Salah. Whatever happens, it will be an interesting summer in Madrid.
