Racism ignites Ligue 1 – Norwegian’s attack on Cameroonian!

The number one topic in France is the incident from the Toulouse–Le Havre match, where there is suspicion of racism between the players

Every season, neutral football fans complain about the lack of excitement in the French league, noting that Paris Saint-Germain have claimed the title without much challenge in eight of the past ten seasons. This autumn, however, is different. PSG may be leading, but Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Lens, Strasbourg, and Monaco are all just a few points behind, which leaves little room for such complaints. Yet, as of Monday morning, none of these sporting topics (in the classic sense) are dominating the headlines — something completely different has.

French football has been shaken by an incident that occurred during the 0–0 match between Le Havre and Toulouse, with the country now buzzing over a potential racist episode and debating whether it qualifies as racism. The key figures are Le Havre coach Didier Digard and Toulouse winger Aron Donnum, a Norwegian accused of insulting Le Havre’s Cameroonian player Simon Ebonog.

The episode began in the first minute of stoppage time, when cameras captured Donnum in a duel with Ebonog, waving his hand in front of his nose with a grimace suggesting he had smelled something unpleasant. Digard interpreted the gesture as a racist reference to odors associated with Africans.

“If this isn’t racism, then what is?” Digard, a former Middlesbrough player, reacted strongly after the match.

“This goes beyond football. I won’t speculate about what was going through his mind, but it was certainly an insult to my player. If we say it’s not racism, then what is it? Did he directly tell him he stinks? We know very well where some people come from and what this gesture implies,” Digard said, earning a yellow card for his animated response.

The Norwegian international, however, offered a very different explanation, which seemed to only worsen his position in the eyes of French media:

“I just told him he stinks, why is it so terrible to state a fact! It’s crazy to call me a racist. He came close, and I smelled his breath — it was awful. It has nothing to do with racism. It was in the heat of the moment, nothing more. I don’t know why so much fuss is being made.”

French media have highlighted that the incident occurred at a time when Ligue 1 is actively promoting anti-discrimination campaigns, which amplified reactions both on social media and among former players. Many argue that, even without racist intent, the gesture itself should be considered offensive and unworthy of professional sport.

The Le Havre–Toulouse match ended goalless, but the closing moments of the game took on a symbolic significance far beyond the scoreline. Digard, who has managed Le Havre since 2023 and previously led Nice, now finds himself at the center of the biggest controversy of his coaching career, with French media largely siding with the Cameroonian player and Digard.
